Why does preserving family and community history matter—and how do we do it ourselves?
This Black History Month program explores the importance of documenting and protecting our stories before they are lost or erased. Featuring Phil Armstrong, former Executive Director of Tulsa’s Greenwood Rising Museum, and Akuyea Karen Vargas, founder of the Kitsap Equity Race and Community Engagement (ERACE) Coalition, the event offers insight into building preservation efforts from the ground up – from family archives to community institutions.
Preservation is not just for museums – it starts at home
Why This Matters Now
At a time when history is being challenged, censored, or rewritten, preserving our legacy is not optional—it is urgent. This event invites families, elders, youth, organizers, and creatives to reflect, learn, and take action to ensure our stories endure, in our own words, on our own terms.
An essential conversation about memory, power, and generational legacy. - Call To Conscience: Honoring Dr. Quintard Taylor & BlackPast.org
